The sign on the glass of the community sports center said that. #BETTERBEATSPERFECT I was on the way to yoga class. Yes, better definitely beats perfect. Small habits make a life change.
For instance, I know that playing a piano piece from start to end for a few hours a day makes no difference. Mindful practice shows up a lot of improvement. This means, thinking actively about which area to work on, working on that area, identifying improvements. See, better beats perfect.
However commonsense is not common. Move this to art or to writing, commonsense makes a stop, kills the engine and goes and makes love to sloth. In the meantime, the mind, fixated on the dissonance experienced between good taste and poor skills, tries to make the dissonance go away by painting new pieces from start to finish, thinking, #10000hours.

Painted using my Gansai Tambi in card size. I tried to follow Ian Robert’s instructions to paint only shapes and it seems that square and triangles are my favourite shapes. This building is on a road name Club Street. I felt I had to add the dancing figures that I had been practicing. I had thought this would take an hour tops. It took days.
I have been doing a lot more small practices instead of large paintings after Ian Roberts walked through how to work out composition using a small thumbnail sketch.

| Aveda Shampoo : bought 故事树 bar shampoos to replace Aveda shampoos. It did not replace. Not even a little. | Bought a used plate from a thrift shop and a new foldable 10cmx10cm square plates. My existing mixing plate was taking up too much space at my table for small sketches. I just had to get a smaller one. Persuaded myself it was okay because it was inexpensive. |
| TN passport size and inserts – Did a pretend writing at the shops and decided it was too small. The standard is a very useable format. | 3 Tin containers for Gansai Tambi colours because the paper box felt fragile. Nobody else had found a solution for them except this seller on Taobao who had not made a sale for this product in 3 years. |
| Sketchbook – Used small size pads for watercolour and a free rough sketch book for trying out exercises. A good replacement. | Gansai Tambi Seasons palette (12 – used) and the colour Art Nouveau (24 – new) because I wanted to use them for simple exercises. The real excuse is that they are so pretty. |
| Chinese Tea (Various) – Bought and drank flower teas instead (roses and chrysanthemums). A good replacement. | Incense: It feels fancy |
